I just got a 2021 UX250h AWD, thinking it would be a great commuter car for my wife. But I’m a bit confused about the gas mileage. According to the car, I’m getting around 35-36 MPG, which seems normal for mostly highway driving. But when it comes to the range, it feels a bit off. After filling up, the range is shown as around 370 to 390 miles, but after driving about 150 miles, it says I’ve got just over half a tank and only 150 miles left. 😵

I took it to the dealer, and while they kept the car for two days, they said everything is working fine. The service writer mentioned the range might be affected by how I’m driving (highway driving vs. city driving) or using accessories, but it still feels like something’s off.

I really want to like this car, but I expected better mileage, especially since one of the sales pitches was that it could make a 350-mile trip on a single tank. I even joked with the salesman about it, but he backed off the claim, saying he was talking about his Camry instead (yeah, right). 🤷‍♂️

So, is it just me? Is the electric motor or hybrid battery not pulling its weight? Anyone else experience something similar with the UX250h?

First, congrats on the new car!
Second, what you have noticed is something a lot of hybrid drivers have, too.
The mileage you are seeing does sound about right for highway driving, but the range indicator can be tricky and tends to fluctuate (based on driving style and conditions).
Hybrids thrive in city driving where there are more stopping and starting to regenerate the battery. In this case, continuous highway driving might not be fully utilizing the electric motor.
Also, AC and even road conditions impact the range (more than you/we think).
In conclusion, your dealer is right, so you need to make a few changes and pay more attention from now on.

I wouldn't worry too much if I were you, the MPG seems normal, but range estimates can be tricky with hybrids and it mostly depends on driving habits and accessories.

Try a few trips with lighter accessory use and maybe a mix of city driving to see if the range improves.

I bought my UX250h in March and average 40.8 MPG, mostly on highways with some stop-and-go traffic.

A couple of things to keep in mind:
  1. The range indicator adjusts based on your driving, often improving as you drive.
  2. Driving style matters, try accelerating downhill and easing off uphill to use momentum and save fuel.
If you're still getting poor mileage, it might be an issue with the car.
