So, I’ve got this 2019 UX250H, and lately, it’s developed this charming new feature, a loud “clacking” sound from somewhere underneath, especially when I start accelerating from a stop. It’s not subtle, either. Imagine someone taking a hockey stick and smacking it on the ice in an empty arena. It’s that kind of vibe, except it's my car.

It usually gives me two solid clacks in quick succession, like it’s counting down to something ominous. Haven’t taken it in yet, but any guesses before I hand over the keys to the dealership? Thanks in advance!

It is possible something got stuck underneath your car. If you have vehicle ramps, you can drive up to inspect the underside. Only engage the emergency brake before anything, and use wheel chocks behind the rear tires. This setup works well when I change the oil in my vehicles too.

Have you noticed any issues with the steering?

I’ll give it a shot and check for anything loose or stuck under there. Thanks for the tip on safety.

How did you sort yours? I had a similar situation with my 2020 RAV4 Hybrid, where a “clack-clack” sound would pop up during acceleration. It was a loose heat shield under the car. The sound was worse when the engine shifted from electric to gas, as the vibrations would cause the shield to rattle against the exhaust system. Anyway, it was a quick fix, tightening a couple of bolts at the dealership sorted it out
